Running Fitness: An Excellent Exercise Challenge!

Running fitness is a great way to get in shape for the ambitious. You don't necessarily have to be an athlete to enjoy the benefits of running. Cardiovascular health, weight loss, even improved self-esteem are benefits that can come from a regular running program.

One good thing about running is the fact that you don't need any special equipment. About the only thing you would need is a good pair of running shoes. Quality shoes reduce the risk of injury by absorbing the shock of running. Preventing injury is important because you don't want to stop running once you have built up your time and distance.

Another thing you can do to prevent injury is to do strength training at least twice per week. This helps to build strong bones and muscle to condition your body for running.

Gradual progression is also important. You don't want to start off running too long or far. The key is to start out slowly, and gradually build up to a 20 minute run.

Although running is good exercise, it's not for everyone. If you have a chronic condition or disability, you may need to try other effective forms of exercise such as, walking, swimming, or cycling. (You should always consult your physician before starting any new exercise program.)
