Nutrition For Seniors Makes For A Healthy Lifestyle

Nutrition for seniors is a very important part of a health fitness program. We baby boomers have grown up with the idea of the "Basic 4" food groups. These included: dairy group, meat group, grain group and the fruit and vegetable group. Today the food groups have changed to include healthy fats, Nuts, seeds and legumes and the emphasis on lean meats from the meat group.

The idea is to choose an eating plan that works for you and that includes the basic guidelines for healthy foods. Along with the familiar basic four, focus on low-fat milk products with the dairy group. Choose lean meats in the meat group, which also includes eggs, fish, poultry and nuts. To help control cholesterol levels include the "good fats" which are low saturated fats. Eating a diet that is low in trans fats, cholesterol, sodium and added sugars is also recommended. Adding supplements to your diet can also help you improve your energy and health. You might also try adding other types of food to your diet such as honey.
